Why purchase a "Legal for Trade" scale? In Canada, one must use a "Legal for Trade" scale to sell jewellery or gemstones by weight. It is not legal to sell jewellery or gemstones by weight without a "Legal for Trade" scale.

Gram scales have accuracies of 0.1 grams, sufficient to measure alloy proportions for casting and for weighing gold, silver and platinum jewellery for wholesale and retail sales. Gram scale accuracies are not sufficient to weigh diamonds and gemstones.

Carat scales have accuracies of 0.01 carats, so they can weigh diamonds and gemstones with an accuracy of one point. Carat scales may not have the capacity for most alloy and sales applications - 50 carats equal 10 grams.

Scale prices increase as the maximum scale weight (capacity) increases, and prices increase faster still as the accuracy increases.
