Instructional Books and Video

Tabletop Machining
by Joe Martin
Tabletop Machining
Sherline's owner, Joe Martin, has written a book that gives you not just the "hows", but also the "whys" of machining practices. Being a hobbyist himself as well as a manufacturer, Joe is familiar with the needs of both the home shop machinist and the commercial production facility. His insights offer a unique and practical perspective on the equipment and processes of machining at both extremes ... from intricate miniature machining projects to full size shop production tools and practices.
This book details "real world" practices in machining and gives a good insight into the challenges faced by machinists. Too often, good craftsmen are stopped from venturing forth because the only information available shows the technically perfect way to do things rather than the simple, practical methods everyone really uses. This book should be required reading for all newly graduated engineers. For those wishing to design and build their first metal parts, it is a perfect starting point. Naturally, Sherline tools are featured throughout in the examples, but the rules of machining apply to all types of equipment and sizes of projects. Information is given on selecting materials; using a lathe and a mill; measuring tools; cutting tools; using accessories for threading, indexing and gearcutting; setting up a home shop and more. Several simple projects are provided for beginning machinists. A gallery of photos of superb miniature projects will inspire you, and a history of Sherline tools is written from the point of view of giving you some guidance if you've ever thought of taking a product of your own to market.
Book: 8-1/2" x 11", colour, softbound, 308 pages, 380+ photos.

Home Shop Machinist's Handbook
by Doug Briney
Home Shop Machinist's Handbook
Doug Briney's book is a complete guide for the amateur machinist. It is especially valuable to the Sherline tool owner because it not only covers all aspects of machine shop work, it features the Sherline lathe and milling machine in its illustrations and text. Its projects were all designed specifically for fabrication on Sherline equipment. This book is a valuable asset to anyone's library, from beginner to experienced machinist.
Book: 7-3/4" x 9-1/4", black and white, softbound, 285 pages.

Steam Engine Video
Rudy Kouhoupt, long time editor at Home Shop Machinist Magazine, has put together a complete set of video instructions that take you from start to finish in building a small steam engine. The VHS video runs 3 hours and 38 minutes and offers a wealth of information on machining. With the video you get a set of dimensioned plans which detail each individual part. You also get a complete bill of materials showing you which raw materials you will need to assemble before starting.
This is the perfect way to build your first steam engine. It's like having a machinist with 30 years of experience standing by your side while you turn the handles and crank out the parts. And when you are done, you will not only have built your confidence level and gained a lot of very valuable machining skills, you will also have a beautiful working steam engine for your office, den, or coffee table.
