Sherline Lathe, Model 4000 with 15" Bed

The Sherline Mini-Lathe Model 4000 will perform a host of tasks:

• Lathe can turn, face, bore, drill, ream, polish, and cut tapers.
• When used with vertical Milling Column attachment can be used for milling, fly cutting, drilling, and boring operations.
• Cuts both English and metric threads.

Precision machined with tough anodized finish. Lifetime lubricated bearings. Machining accuracies of 1/1000th of an inch can be easily obtained. Standard equipment for the basic Model 4000 includes:

•  high torque DC motor with variable speed control.
• speed control is internally equipped with a converter that automatically adjusts from 100 to 240 volts, 50 or 60 Hz without loss of torque.
• a 2.75" x 6" cross-slide
• 15" steel bed to allow 8" between centers
• standard 1-5/8" laser engraved aluminum handwheels
• pulleys, belt, faceplate, lathe dog, two dead centers, two hexagonal keys, tool post
• sharpened high-speed cutting tool
• 3-jaw chuck
• 8 foot three-wire power cord

When the lathe is set up with the Thread Cutting Attachment, the motor is removed and the spindle is turned by a large handwheel. In the picture, a thread is being cut in a brass part held in a 4-Jaw Chuck. In the foreground, are some of the change gears used for cutting different size threads.

Steam Engine Video
Rudy Kouhoupt, long time editor at Home Shop Machinist Magazine, has put together a complete set of video instructions that take you from start to finish in building a small steam engine.
