BenchMate Work-Holding Systems for Jewellers
BenchMate is a powerful holding system that stabilizes stone setting, speeds up soldering, and simplifies jewellery repair. BenchMate reduces the hand force needed to set stones. You can set more stones per day and do a nicer job with less strain and greater confidence. Special attachments turn BenchMate into an advanced soldering aid. BenchMate simplifies complex jewellery fabrication and torch work.

Using BenchMate requires no major change to your work methods. To install the Basic BenchMate Holder on your work bench, fasten the tapered Fixed Mounting Plate on the front of your bench. This plate mates with every BenchMate attachment including: Basic BenchMate Holder, Bench Pin, Engraving Vise Shelf, Sawing Plate, BenchMate Vise, 4" Solder Station, and Double Soldering Station. To change attachments, you lift them up and off the tapered Fixed Mounting Plate. It takes three seconds and requires no tools. The Optional Mounting Adapter and Adjustable Height Bracket provide flexibility in mounting and height adjustments. This patented system keeps your work centered in front of your bench at the right height, for good body posture and greater comfort.

The Basic BenchMate Holder tilts and rotates to any position while you work on rings, pendants, earrings, and other jewellery. The BenchMate Holder's jaws hold both jewellery and other attachments including  Narrow Solder Fingers, Wide Solder Fingers, Shellac Pad, Pitch Cup, and Insulated Solder Clamp. The Third Hand Attachmentafixes to the Basic BenchMate Holder and the 4" Solder Station. Extra plastic jaws for the holder are available. The holder moves freely in all directions, or you can add selective resistance by tightening the pivot knobs. You can also lock it solidly in any position. The BenchMate Holder moves only when and where you want, eliminating accidental slips.

More applications of the BenchMate Work-Holding System are obtained with the Inside Ring Holder, with the Block Shelves for holding the GRS Magnablock, Standard Engraving Block, and Positioning Vise, with the Pitchbowl, and with the GRS Hand Ring Clamp.

Inside Ring Holder
Inside Ring Holder
Many wide, delicate or, unusual rings are difficult to hold with an outside clamp. This attachment adds inside ring-holding capability to any BenchMate. It gives 200% more access to the outside of the ring and keeps it from flexing while you work. Channel, bead, and bezel settings are surprisingly easy using this inside holder

From the set of collets, you select the closest size that fits inside the ring. The screw expands the collet to hold the ring securely. These hard plastic collets won't scratch or mark rings. With an extra collet set, you can "double-stack" collets for extremely wide rings or hold several rings simultaneously for high volume work.

GRS Engraving Blocks and Ball Vises
Engraving Blocks, or Ball Vises, are specially designed for handwork including engraving, jewellery making, gunsmithing, wood carving, sculpture, precision assembly, model making, mold & die work, and more. These flexible workholders are very stable yet easily maneuvered while you work. Self-centering jaws have tooling holes that accept a variety of pins and attachments. The top half of each vise rotates smoothly about its center. The spherical bottom sits in a socket ring so you can tilt it in any direction.

GRS blocks are world-renowned for their smoothness, mechanical integrity, and longevity. Four models are available:

GRS Standard Engraving Block

The GRS Standard Engraving Block combines outstanding quality and value. It weighs 19 lb (8.6 kg) which is 25% heavier than other small blocks. Inside is a double ball bearing system for smooth rotation without looseness or wear, and a brake that allows you to control the rotational resistance like Magnablock. Both jaws have replaceable threads.

Solid steel is used to make this block. The black jaws and satin chrome finish save your eyes from glare and strain.

GRS MicroBlock Ball Vise

Like larger GRS vises, the MicroBlock is machined from solid stainless steel and finished with a special low glare treatment to reduce eye strain.  It features a self-centering jaw system and an adjustable internal brake system that allows the user to choose the amount of rotational resistance.  The MicroBlock's low profile and compact design is especially suited for microscope work or other situations where the size of a larger vise is an obstacle.

GRS Magnablock

GRS Magnablock gives you outstanding quality, strength, and convenience. Weighing 30 lb (13.7 kg), this extra-heavy block adds more stability to your work, especially when using power tools or chasing hammers. Inside Magnablock is a massive ball and roller bearing system that always turns smoothly and prevents internal wear. GRS Positioning Vise

Excellent accessory for microscope work. This unique vise has many Magnablock similarities and one huge difference: you can reposition its center of rotation. In the photo below, the upper part of the vise is off-center to the right. By pulling the release lever, you can slide the upper half back to the left until it is centered, or even further until it is off to the left. After moving, it will rotate about its new position.

Why is this important? Under a microscope, your work must stay in the field of view as you rotate the vise or you can't see it. Using a traditional engraver's block, this only happens when the work is near the center of the jaws. Often, this becomes an impossible limitation. The Positioning Vise lets you move the center of rotation by simply pulling a lever. In seconds, you can reposition your work to rotate within the microscope's field of view.

Even without a microscope, there's another big advantage. This vise weighs a massive 42 lb. The extra weight and larger base provide even more stability for your work.

GRS Low Profile Vise

Some work needs a lower vise height. The Low Profile model offers GRS strength and quality in a shorter model. A popular use is under a microscope where 6" (150 mm) of space is needed between the microscope and the work. The Low Profile Vise has the same jaw size and capacity as the Magnablock, yet is 1.5" shorter.

An option for this vise is a heavy-duty turntable base. By locking the Low Profile Vise from turning, you can use the turntable for work rotation. This combination lets you move the work's center of rotation like the Positioning Vise. The 10" (254 mm) diameter turntable is made from 0.18" (4.5 mm) thick steel with a large ball bearing system underneath.

GRS Metal Former

Easily shape copper, silver and gold bracelets with the GRS Metal Former.  Form flat strips of metal to a perfect "C" shape after you have engraved your design.  The die seat is a soft alloy material that supports pressure from the die, but does not distort your engraving work.  The die seat material can be reformed by heating when necessary.  To shape a bracelet, place one end of the material under the die and press down on the handle.  Continue to work the material through the former, shaping as you go, until you have reached the desired shape.  The unit comes with two different fixed punch sizes and with one adjustable die cavity.  With these punches and die, .25" up to 1.25" wide bracelets can be formed.  Recommended for soft metals such as copper, silver, and gold alloys with a thickness of .030" to .080".

Block Shelves
These shelves use the GRS BenchMate fixed mounting plate to hold your engraving block below the front of your bench. Jewellers especially like this because the top of their block is the same height as their bench pin.
The Standard Shelf, used mainly with the Standard Block and Magnablock, has some up and down adjustability. The Large Shelf has more height adjustment and a larger tray, especially for the Positioning Vise. The 004666 Adjustable Height Bracket works with either shelf.
