Planishing occurs after completion of the forming stage. Choose the stakes that conform most closely to the desired shapes of the finished work. Using a lightweight hammer and starting at the middle, strike the piece with a steady pattern, and work towards the edge. Each of these stakes has a highly polished, specially shaped working surface. For holders suitable for mounting these stakes, see 12.788 and 12.790.
